The above picture shows the box that a 70 cl bottle of Jack Daniels came in. It was given to me as a present by my sister a few Christmases ago and the whiskey which was in the bottle is long gone. But I kept the box because it looks nice.
The makeup of the box isn’t exactly top quality, its pretty much cardboard with a letter look fabric finish. One day I had sold an item which fit perfectly in the box. I added a few packing peanuts and was all ready to wrap it up and send it off when I thought, maybe I should check completed listings. Just in case.
So I checked the completed listings for “Jack Daniels Leather Box” and learned that quite a few had sold for between £5 and £10 plus postage. Needless to say I used something else to pack my item and listed the box in eBay. I don’t really know why I was surprised that the boxes were selling as I have sold Jack Daniels items in the past.
I listed the item for £20 with best offer and free postage and waited for the offers to roll in. I didn’t expect to get the full amount but thought I would let any offers determine what the market value was.
I then got a message from a buyer in Japan, how much is postage? I didn’t really know how much it would cost to send, so I packed up the box. The same box which I had actually used as packaging once before myself! Unfortunately for the potential buyer postage for the box packed safely for the journey was over £10. I informed him and updated postage in the listing for Japan and left the buyer to make up his mind. I figured he may shoot me a low ball offer in the hope I would accept.
He didn’t. He bought it outright and paid £32.20 in total for the box. A box which had cost £18 with a full bottle of whiskey in it when new. I couldn’t believe it. Of course now my brain is trained to look out for Jack Daniels items, no matter how much they seem to be junk, because even empty bottles sell on eBay!
If I ever see JD on sale in the leatherette boxes in the future I’m going to stock up, because when I’ve sold the boxes and bottles you know what that means? FREE WHISKEY!!
