Where do you store your eBay inventory?
If you are just starting out on eBay storage is something you need to consider carefully. If you are an eBay veteran you will know that storage space, or the lack of it, can quickly become a problem.
Years ago I lived on my own, in a house with plenty of space for my “collections”. I had no one to share the space with. All was well. Then I met my now fiancé and we moved in together. Less space. Then we had a baby. Even less space. I still didn’t put the brakes on my buying. The problem I have is I find it impossible to pass up a bargain. I will buy something, even if I already have it, if it’s good value. And that is what caused my storage issue.
I have a lot of stuff and here’s where I keep it…
The Living Room
I have a cupboard in the corner which I store some of the more delicate items I am selling, cups, saucers, figurines and a few old tins. I also have a drawer where I store some of my “smalls”. Cufflinks, pens, jewellery etc.
The Dining Room
We also have a bookshelf in the dining room which I use to store DVD’s, Videos and some board games. I also have a singer sewing machine on a treadle table and another sewing machine in a case stored in here. They look kind of nice to be honest!
I store some of the clothing I have listed hung up in the wardrobe to keep it crease free. It doesn’t take up too much space and because the wardrobe is full I have to sell something before I can buy anything else.
At home I have an “office” which is really just the box room, it’s not big enough for anything else. It has a desk, a filing cabinet and two bookshelves which store among other things, books, computer games, board games and some items of clothing.
The attic is where I store some of my more seasonal items. Things I won’t need for a few months and can sit up there out if sight and mind until Christmas rolls around or a World Cup Year or the Queens next Jubilee etc. I also store a lot of clothes up there. Things are bagged up so as that they don’t get dusty and some of the clothes are vacuum sealed.
I have a blanket box in the conservatory which stores my packing supplies, tape, plastic envelopes, bubble wrap etc. I also have a coffee table that I haven’t got around to selling, a stool and quite a few cardboard boxes for sending items. Currently it’s a bit of a mess and on my to do list to tidy up!
The garage is full to the brim with garden and car related items, decorating supplies and of course stuff I will eventually get around to selling on eBay. I’ve even had to put up shelving to store everything in some kind of order. Organisation isn’t really something I started thinking about until it was too late and I have paid the price for this.
My eBay store has around 400 items for sale and I need to know where each one of these items is when it sells. Sometimes this is an easy task but often times, especially if the item was listed some time ago then I have a treasure hunt on my hands.
I use boxes to store items in to keep the dust off them. Some boxes are labelled with the contents, some are not. My inventory list exists only in my head so I really need to have a good memory.
As you can see from the above room list eBay inventory has taken over my house. Nearly every room has something I will eventually list on eBay. Is this a bad thing? On the face of it yes as surely all of that space would be better used for something else.
But not forgetting this is all stuff that I had collected over the years so I would have been building it up all along anyway. At least now I have an outlet for getting rid of it and clawing back some space in my house. Month on month I am starting to see the difference, especially after I sell a big item and reclaim a section of my office or garage that I haven’t seen for years.
My aim for 2014 is to sell enough to uncover the weights set in the garage and have space to be able to lift them! Who knows after 2015 I may be able to fit a car in there!
Where do you store your items?
I know some eBay sellers use the same tactics as I do but some people have storage units, some have shops and I also know that some people use caravans. I would be interested to know how other home sellers organise their inventory and if you have a system which would be helpful to others I would like to feature it here! So get in touch.
